Strategies for Improving the Production of Scavenging Chickens

The purpose of these papers is to identify ways in which scavenging village poultry production can be improved at little or no cost. There has recently been much recognition given to this system, particularly amongst the very poor, because of its major role in food security, nutrition and income. Scavenging chickens are normally unmanaged with few or no inputs. Here, focus is on improving bird nutrition and health, reducing the high attrition rate of young chickens, and on breeding options.
